Jean Scott - Frugal Video Poker

One of our favorite video poker personalities is gambling writer Jean Scott. She is the author of the following books:

  • The Frugal Gambler
  • More Frugal Gambling
  • Frugal Video Poker
  • The Frugal Video Poker Scouting Guide

Jean Scott has a couple of colorful nicknames, but our favorite is "The Queen of Comps", which is also the name of her new website. (Her website used to be located at FrugalGambler.biz, but now it's at QueenofComps.com.)

The Frugal Gambler

The Frugal Gambler by Jean ScottJean Scott's first book, The Frugal Gambler, was published in 1988. In it, she describes how a savvy gambler can take advantage of coupons and comps offers while playing video poker games, which offer a tremendous amount of fun with a low enough house edge that a smart player can come out a little bit ahead. She followed up 15 years later with a new book called More Frugal Gambling, which was also a big success. Jean Scott is the classic example of a video poker advantage player, and you can bet that she understands the cost per hour of playing video poker better than anyone.

Jean Scott (along with Bob Dancer) is an active participant in a video poker discussion group at Yahoo called vpFREE.

QueenofComps.com

Unfortunately, Jean Scott's website is not information rich. It's mostly just a catalog of products that she's made available. All of the books above are available for purchase on her site. She also offers her own video poker training software called Frugal Video Poker Software. The site also includes a link to GamblingCatalog.com and to VPPlayer.com, both of which are cool and useful sites.

But if you're really looking for content and information from Jean Scott, you'll find it on Las Vegas Advisor, not on QueenofComps.com.

Frugal Fridays

For eight years, Jean Scott wrote a column for the Las Vegas Advisor called Frugal Fridays. The archives of those columns are still available. This content is brilliantly useful. For example, one of our favorites is Jean's column from December 13, 2007, where she describes her husband's experiences when he hit 101 royal flushes simultaneously. (He was playing a 100 pay machine, and got dealt a natural royal flush.)

This might have been just a cool anecdotal type column, but Jean Scott used it as an opportunity to answer readers' questions, like:

  • How much is the jackpot on 101 royal flushes? (In this case it was over $100,000 - he was playing $125 per hand.)
  • How much do you tip on a jackpot that big? (She suggests tipping 1% on smaller jackpots, then reducing the percentage to 1/2% on larger jackpots. A smaller jackpot she defines as $2000 or so. They tipped $500 to the change person who brought the check, and then gave $20 tips to as many people connected to the win as possible, eventually tipping about $1000 total. They attribute this to playing at the Palms, which is their "home casino".)

You can read the archive of Jean Scott's Frugal Fridays here. Her new column is called "Frugal Vegas", and you can find it here.
